What matters

Analyser or visualiser? They are not the same thing

One is an instrument you read. The other is a picture you watch. Most tools quietly give you the second and call it the first.

What an analyser actually is

A spectrum analyser is a measuring instrument. The point is that you can read information off it: where the energy sits, whether the low end is piling up, which frequency is poking out and causing you problems.

A spectrum visualiser has a different job. It is there to look good in time with the music, and it is designed for how it looks rather than how accurately it reports.

Why the distinction matters for a video

Both are legitimate, and which you want depends on the post:

  • Showing a mix, a plugin chain, or a technical breakdown: you want the analyser, because the audience is other producers who can read it.
  • Promoting a track to listeners: you want the decorative styles, because nobody outside the studio cares how accurate the meter is.
  • Posting a loud drop: the analyser with highlighting reads better than plain bars, because the standout parts of the mix separate visually.

Getting the analyser look out of the studio

The usual route to an analyser on video is screen recording your DAW, which drags the plugin UI, the window frame, and a landscape aspect ratio into the shot along with it.

Is this a real analyzer or just decorative bars?+
The analyzer style is built to read like the meter in your DAW, with peak tracking and the loudest standout frequencies highlighted. There are also decorative styles (bars, fluid, shape) if you want the look rather than the reading.
What is the peak line for?+
It traces the loudest level each part of the spectrum has recently hit and falls back slowly, so you can see peaks that would otherwise flash past too fast to notice. Same idea as the peak hold on a hardware meter.
What does the highlighting do?+
It picks out frequencies that are loud compared to what is around them and gives them their own colour, so a standout bassline or lead visibly lifts out of the rest of the mix.
Can I change the colours?+
Yes. Separate colours for the main spectrum, the highlighted peaks, and the peak line, so you can match your branding or keep it neutral.
Why not just screen record my DAW analyser?+
You can, but you capture the plugin window, the interface around it, and whatever resolution your screen happens to be, in landscape. This exports clean 1080p 60fps, vertical if you want, with nothing in frame but the spectrum.
