How it works

Why the visual follows the kick instead of a BPM

A tempo number is a guess about the whole track. Following the track itself is not a guess at all.

The problem with tempo-locked visuals

The obvious way to sync a visual to a beat is to take the BPM and animate on that grid. It works for about eight bars, and then it starts to slide.

The reason is that almost nothing you post is dead on the grid. A clip trimmed by hand does not start exactly on a downbeat. Live-played drums push and pull. Swing puts hits deliberately off the straight subdivision. Once the animation and the audio disagree by even a fraction of a beat, the eye catches it immediately, and the whole thing reads as cheap.

Mapping to the track instead

Rather than setting a tempo-locked BPM for the visuals, the visualisers map to the beat of your track directly. It stays synced on its own, and you never have to think about it.

That is the whole interaction. There is no tempo field, no grid setting, and nothing to tap in. You upload the track and it is already following it.

What that gets you

Clip a random 15 seconds from anywhere in the track and it will always be on beat. No downbeat to line up, no offset to nudge, no checking whether the section you grabbed happened to start in the right place.

It also means loose material is not a problem. Swung, live-played, or slightly off-grid beats stay locked, because there is no grid for them to fall off in the first place.

What is a beat visualiser?+
A tool that turns a beat into a video where the graphics move with the audio. You get spectrum bars, scrolling waveforms, a spinning vinyl, a vintage oscilloscope, spectrogram, chladni patterns, a 3D chrome orb, your own 3D models, kaleidoscope, and a split mode that runs several at once. Do I have to type in my BPM?+
No, and there is nowhere to. The visualisers map to the beat of your track on their own, so you never have to think about it. Clip a random 15 seconds from anywhere and it will still be on beat, which is not true of anything animating on a tempo you typed in.
Why was BeatVisualiser made?+
