How Do I Add an Audio Visualizer Over an Existing Video?

Choose a bright waveform, spectrum or scope on black when you need to keep editing the footage elsewhere. Avoid dark visual elements that Screen mode would also remove.

If the footage is finished, render once. If the edit is still changing, keep the visualizer as a reusable layer.

Render the footage and visualizer together

This is the shortest workflow. Add the video background, trim the song and footage to the same useful section, position the visualizer and export the combined MP4.

Use it when you do not need several shots, detailed transitions or a long editing timeline. The preview shows the actual relationship between the footage and the audio-driven layer before export.

Keep the visualizer as a compositing layer

A separate layer is better when the footage will be recut, colour-graded or combined with other shots. Export a visualizer designed for compositing: bright pixels, a genuinely black background and no dark subject you expect to keep.

Screen mode is not true transparency. It compares pixel brightness and removes black visually. That makes it portable between common editors, but it also means black detail inside the visualizer disappears.

Match the frame before export

The visualizer layer and the edit should use the same aspect ratio and resolution. Matching them before export avoids scaling artifacts and unexpected crops.

Use portrait for a 9:16 social edit.
Use landscape for a 16:9 YouTube edit.
Keep the visualizer inside interface-safe areas.
Check that its brightest parts remain visible over the brightest footage.

How do I put a music visualizer over a video?+

Either use the video directly as the visualizer background and export both together, or export a bright visualizer on black and place it above the footage with Screen blend mode in an editor.

Do I need a transparent video file?+

Not always. A light-on-black visualizer can be composited with Screen blend mode, which visually removes black without requiring an alpha-channel video.

Which visualizers work best with Screen mode?+

Bright spectrum bars, waveforms, oscilloscope lines and neon-style graphics work well. Mostly black objects are a poor fit because their dark detail disappears with the background.
